Capital Region Parrot Society
Why do we do home visits?
Parrots are like no other animal companion. They are highly intelligent, demanding and high maintenance animals. This is just in their nature. Parrots are also incredibly fragile and sensitive. A home visit allows us to help a potential adopter create a safe home environment for a parrot and provide education when needed. We do not currently have a facility at this time and operate out of several different homes. Due to this a home visit helps us find people who are serious about adoption. This is also one of the reasons we have an adoption application. It is also for safety because if we allowed every stranger interested in a parrot into our foster homes it creates the potential for a dangerous situation. The volunteers who look after our birds invest a lot of time and energy into them. Some birds have been fostered for years. By doing home visits it helps the birds find the best homes possible. It's not fair to the birds to be bounced back and fourth from home to home. We strive to find lifetime matches and work within the best interest of the birds.
Why don't we adopt out of state or to far away places?
By adopting around the Capital Region and surrounding areas it allows us to be supportive and a resource to adopters. In some instances birds may need to be returned to us and to have a volunteer travel a vast distance at the drop of a hat isn't fair to them or the bird.
Why do we charge adoption fees?
Adoption fees play a key role in helping us to help parrots. Vet bills, for exotic animals, aren't cheap but are a necessity for all animal companions. By having adoption fees it helps to off set the costs of initial check ups and treatment. Some birds relinquished require extensive medical treatment. This can range into the thousands. Also it may be necessary to purchase a new cage for a parrot companion if they don't come with one or the one they have is unfit for them. Fees also go towards general expenses.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact us. One of our amazing volunteers will get back to you as soon as they can. Thank you for understanding!
